The President's Ballot Box Bombshell: Anarchy Above All Else

Image
Certainly, a president who benefitted from due process in a time considered as the highest reign of corruption in Nigeria ought to have more trust in the process, especially now, in a moment supposedly seen as the reign of integrity. T he president is aware he is a better dictator than a democratic president. By Paul Aremo-Oluwa  Talk is cheap. Maybe not! The talk draws its value from the talker.  The president of Nigeria, his excellence  Muhammadu Buhari has given an express directive to the police and army to be ruthless on thugs and ballot box thieves. If the word ruthless does not echo excessive force and brutality to your ears I wonder if such person ever read a thing on military regimes and junta.

Meet Jide Afolabi – The Ottawa man vying to be Ottawa’s first black city councillor

Image
Ottawa, Canada’s capital city has never had a black city councilor – Jide Afolabi wants to change that. By Moses Mutabarika | 0ctober 19, 2018 To walk into Jide’s office, at the edge of Capital Ward in Ottawa, is to understand how little details can deliver on a promise – floor to ceiling wainscoting, glass doors, an out-sized window to let in a flood of sunlight. It is, perhaps, a testament to a life carefully crafted. The idea of careful crafting is all the more emphasized if one understands that 27 years ago, Jide was a teenager in Lagos, Nigeria, carrying multiple pails of water up flights of stairs so there’d be enough for drinking, cooking and washing.

And I would like to tell you a few personal stories about what I like to call “the danger of the single story.” I grew up on a university campus in eastern Nigeria. My mother says that I started reading at the age of two, although I think four is probably close to the truth. So I was an early reader, and what I read were British and American children's books.
